A simple setup for recording a family conversation
A quieter room and a little preparation matter more than elaborate equipment.
Prepare the room together
Choose a comfortable place away from a television, fan or busy window. Put the recording device on a stable surface near the speakers rather than holding it throughout the conversation. Explain what you are doing, get explicit permission and agree whether the recording is just for the family. Bring a short list of prompts, water and any photographs the person has chosen. Avoid turning the room into a studio if that makes them feel self-conscious.
Make a short test
Record a minute of ordinary conversation and listen back with headphones. Check that both voices are clear, that fabric is not rubbing the microphone and that there is enough storage and battery capacity. Notifications can interrupt a recording, so consider a suitable do-not-disturb setting. Do not promise that a particular app will keep recording through a phone call; test the actual device. During the interview, leave the device alone and concentrate on the person rather than the screen.
Keep the recording findable
Afterwards, label the file with the date, speakers and a short topic. Copy it to a second location and check that the copy opens. Write a brief contents note so relatives can find a particular story without listening to the entire recording. A transcript is useful, but automatic transcription can get names and places wrong. Review it with the speaker when possible. Keep the original recording as well as any edited version, and respect any request to remove a private section.
Keep original files and objects safe, and ask permission before sharing another person's story.
